The Black Gold is one of my first photographs without text. In a sense the black rain perhaps crowds the image too much for text, yet I simply feel it is a ficitional documentary photograph of what could be a scene of the future. The black rain is a symbol for our neglect of the planet. It signifies oil, ie it look slike the oil that was once pumped into this gas station is now coming back to haunt us. It also refers to the black rain that actually happens after an atomic explosion.

The oil busines drives most things in politics and business whether we know it or not. The availablility of it over the past 50 years has changed every facet of our lives, from how we move around the planet, get to work to the plastic containers we use, to architecture and the urban landscape itself, to how our food is distributed and farmed.
